Tetracycline Resistance Gene in Asian Aquatic Environments

چکیده
Antibiotic pollution has recently been a global environmental and human health concern. When bacteria are exposed to antibiotics, they express drug resistance. Drug resistance genes can be vertically and horizontally transferred in the environment. In this paper, I provide a summary of our work on one category of tetracycline resistance gene, termed ribosomal protection protein gene. In particular, tet(M) is discussed in the context of its origin and distribution in aquatic environments of Asia.

Use of Aeromonas spp. as General Indicators of Antimicrobial Susceptibility among Bacteria in Aquatic Environments in Thailand
Antimicrobials are widely used, not only for treating human infections, but also for treatment of livestock and in fish farms. Human habitats in Southeastern Asian countries are located in close proximity to aquatic environments. As such, the human populations within these regions are at risk of exposure to antimicrobial resistant bacteria, and thereby disseminating antimicrobial resistance gen...
متن کاملDetection of tetracycline resistance genes in bacteria isolated from fish farms using polymerase chain reaction
Five common tetracycline resistance genes tet(A), tet(B), tet(M), tet(O) and tet(S) were studied by polymerase chain reaction in 100 bacteria isolated from Iranian fish farms. In the antibiogram test most of the bacteria were either intermediately or completely resistant to tetracycline. Nine isolates out of 46 Aeromonas spp. contained eithe...
متن کاملEmergence and Dispersion of Resistance Genes by the Aquatic Environment: a review
The association of the emergence of bacterial resistance to clinical environments is common; however, aquatic environments, especially the polluted ones, also play a key role in this regard. Aquatic environments can act as facilitator for the exchange of mobile elements, responsible for resisting antibiotics. They even may stimulate the emergence and selection of these elements through contamin...

متن کاملViromes As Genetic Reservoir for the Microbial Communities in Aquatic Environments: A Focus on Antimicrobial-Resistance Genes
Despite studies of viromes isolated from aquatic environments are becoming increasingly frequent, most of them are limited to the characterization of viral taxonomy. Bacterial reads in viromes are abundant but the extent to which this genetic material is playing a role in the ecology of aquatic microbiology remains unclear. To this aim, we developed of a useful approach for the characterization...
